The History of Gruene Arriving in Texas in the mid 1840’s, German immigrants – Ernest and Antoinette Gruene – arrived in New Braunfels in 1845. The Gruene family purchased land down river that would eventually produce cotton. That land was the beginning of what has become known as Gruene, Texas. The original cotton gin has become the Gristmill River Restaurant and Bar. The center of the original town’s social life was Gruene Hall; a dance hall and saloon. It still remains a performance venue and the true heart of Gruene. In 1975, Gruene was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as an entire district… it’s historic buildings preserved as shops, hotels and eateries. This area offers our homeowners an authentic feel so rarely found in The Lone Star State.
